Young Guns Rising to the Top 7 Jan 15

A COMMITMENT to youth development has helped Goodwood Tennis Club dominate selections for this month’s Super 10s series at Melbourne Park.

Goodwood Tennis Club players Meeka, Mia, Charlotte, Alex, Henry and Doni have made the state under-10 team.

Six of the eight players representing SA at the national under-10 finals hail from the Millswood club after catching the eye at state-based selection tournaments.

Australia’s No. 1 ranked 10-year-old girl Charlotte Kempenaerz-Pocz will lead the squad alongside clubmates Meeka Marshall and Mia Tsoukalas.

Boys Doni Gashi, Henry Pilkington and Alex Despoja will also feature in the teams event played during the second week of the Australian Open. Goodwood coach Ben Milner, who will mentor the side, says the selections are reward for the hard work of players and coaches at the club.

“There are a lot of athletes aspiring to make this team from a number of alternate clubs from all over SA,” the Tennis SA coach of the year says.

Super 10s is a national junior development program aimed at encouraging team work and fair play among young players.

Milner says the national playoffs, where players will feature in both doubles and singles matches, will allow promising juniors to develop their game while watching some of the world’s best players in action.
